CTP Insurers

Six green slip providers in NSW are licensed to sell CTP insurance: AAMI, Allianz, CIC Allianz, GIO, NRMA Insurance and QBE. These six CTP insurers are owned by four financial services companies.

CTP is regulated because it is a compulsory public requirement provided by private companies. State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) is the government body responsible for statutory oversight of green slip providers. Insurers set their own prices but must submit them to SIRA at least once a year. SIRA rejects prices if they are excessive, do not fund the insurer’s liability or fail to meet insurer guidelines.

By law all green slips must offer exactly the same cover. Consider three main factors when choosing a CTP insurer:

  1. Prices
  2. At-Fault Driver Cover – an extra free benefit with green slips from NRMA Insurance, Allianz and GIO
  3. Ease of access to insurers for payments or renewals.

2. Who is SIRA?

SIRA (State Insurance Regulatory Authority) supervises the six licensed insurers in the NSW CTP scheme. SIRA took over from the Motor Accidents Authority (MAA) in September 2015.

SIRA has three main roles:

  • To monitor insurer performance
  • To support programs for road safety and fast recovery of people injured on the road
  • To provide independent advice on making CTP claims and resolving disputes.

CTP insurers must at least once a year submit prices to SIRA. SIRA can reject price changes if they are excessive, do not fund insurer liability or fail to meet insurer guidelines. The public can contact SIRA for general enquiries about the NSW CTP scheme, feedback about green slip prices, or for help with making CTP claims after an accident.

3. How do I know which provider CTP insurance is with?

A free service provided by RMS is the green slip and registration check. It is helpful if you are buying a used car or have forgotten any of your details.

All you need is the registration number. You can find the CTP green slip provider and policy expiry date, or check whether registration is expired, suspended or cancelled. Note, this service keeps private the name and address of the registered owner.

4. Does APIA offer greenslips?

Yes, APIA (Australian Pensioners Insurance Agency) offers green slips as an agent for GIO. APIA is not licensed to issue green slips as a green slip insurer. When you purchase a greenslip from APIA, you are purchasing a GIO green slip. The price will be the same had you purchased directly from GIO.

5. Can I get discounts on other products?

GIO and NRMA offer discounts on other insurance products you hold with them:

  • GIO offers a $50 discount on Platinum or Comprehensive insurance if you hold a GIO green slip on the same vehicle
  • NRMA Insurance offers a Loyalty Discount, based on eligible policies and the number of consecutive years you have held them. An NRMA green slip is one eligible policy that counts towards a Loyalty Discount on other NRMA insurance products.

These offers do not make GIO and NRMA green slip prices any cheaper than those given in the greenslips.com.au calculator.
